NOTICE OF POSITION OPENING

Special Education - ORIENTATION & MOBILITY SPECIALIST

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION : Responsible for providing instruction in orientation and mobility to visually impaired students and other students with disabilities as appropriate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Evaluate visually impaired students to determine needs for special training in independent travel skills.
  • Conduct in-service training regarding general information about the student's handicapping condition and educational needs.
  • Assist in the development of an educational program with appropriate techniques and curriculum that can be used successfully in the classroom and/or within the community.
  • Complete and present a written evaluation report to parents/guardians and the local education agency within required timelines.
  • Maintain record of student progress and assist in the development of goals and objectives.
  • Participate in IEPT, MET and other meetings as appropriate.
  • Consult with other personnel including teachers, principals, other ancillary staff and parents/guardians to evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Provide direct instruction for specific skills emphasizing areas of:
    • Sensory awareness and spatial orientation.
    • Concept development and pre-cane skills.
    • Cane skills and independent travel in various environments.
    • Utilization of residual vision and alternative mobility aids
    • Utilization of public transportation.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate records, reports and procedures including, but not limited to, lesson plans and student progress on IEP goals/objectives.
  • Travel to meet job requirements.
  • Conduct parent/teacher conferences as appropriate.
  • Provide staff development and parent/guardian training as needed.
  • Communicate with appropriate school personnel and parents.
  • Provide prereferral consultation.
  • Use various software packages for communication and documentation purposes.
  • Maintain regular consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Maintain a professional personal appearance.
  • Adhere to district health and safety procedures.
  • Adhere to Board Policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Must meet Michigan Department of Education requirements for Orientation & Mobility Specialist. Current Orientation and Mobility certification and certification from ACVREPC (Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals).

PERSONAL SKILLS REQUIRED: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Must have essential technology skills, i.e. skilled at using PC computer, laptop, assistive communication devices/technology and other educational technology and software. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication. Must be able to meet multiple demands from several people. Must be organized and meet with timeline requirements.

TRANSPORTATION: This position may require the employee to transport students to/from various locations to access public transportation, community resources, etc. Employee must be aware and adhere to Board Policy #3105 regarding Visiting and Volunteers.

B. Complaint/Grievance Procedure Notice

I. Any person believing that the Calhoun Intermediate School District or any of the District's staff has inadequately applied the principles and/or regulations of non-discrimination laws or district non-discrimination policies may bring forward a complaint, which shall be referred to as a grievance to the district's Civil Rights Coordinator.

II. The person who believes s/he has a valid basis for grievance shall discuss the grievance informally and on a verbal basis with the District's Civil Rights Coordinator, who shall in turn investigate the complaint and reply with verbal answer to the complainant. S/He may initiate formal procedures according to the following steps:

Step 1

A written statement of the grievance signed by the complainant shall be submitted to the District's Civil Rights Coordinator within five (5) business days of receipt of answers to the informal complaint. The Coordinator shall further investigate the matters of grievance and reply in writing to the complainant within five (5) business days.

Step 2

If the complainant wishes to appeal the decision of the District's Civil Rights Coordinator, s/he may submit a signed statement of appeal to the Superintendent of Schools within five (5) business days after receipt of the Coordinator's response. The Superintendent shall meet with all parties involved, formulate a conclusion and respond in writing to the complainant within ten (10) business days.

Step 3

If the complainant remains unsatisfied, s/he may appeal through a signed written statement to the Board of Education within five (5) business days of his/her receipt of the Superintendent's response in step two. In an attempt to resolve the grievance, the Board of Education shall meet with the concerned parties and their representative within twenty (20) business days of the receipt of such an appeal. A copy of the Board's disposition of the appeal shall be sent to each concerned party within ten (10) business days of this meeting.

The District's Coordinator, on request, will provide a copy of the District's grievance procedure and investigate all complaints in accordance with this procedure.
