Job Description

Unarmed Security for a Homeless Shelter
Pay: $17-19 an hour
Schedule: Friday & Saturday & Tuesday-Thursday: 3pm-11pm
(Friday and Saturday are at our DTSD location and Tues-Thurs are at our National City location.)

Job Summary: We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Unarmed Security Guard to join our team at our homeless shelter in downtown San Diego. The ideal candidate will be responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for residents, staff, and visitors. This role requires a high level of professionalism, empathy, and the ability to handle sensitive situations with care.

Responsibilities:
  • Monitor and patrol the premises to ensure the safety and security of residents, staff, and visitors.
  • Enforce shelter rules and regulations in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Assist with the entry and exit of residents and visitors, ensuring proper identification and authorization.
  • Respond to emergencies and incidents, providing assistance and coordinating with local law enforcement or emergency services as needed.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the shelter grounds and facilities to identify and address any security or safety concerns.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed reports of daily activities, incidents, and any security-related issues.
  • Provide a visible and approachable presence to deter potential security threats.
  • Assist residents and staff with conflict resolution and de-escalate tense situations.
  • Collaborate with shelter staff to support the overall mission and goals of the organization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the safety and security of the shelter.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid California Guard Card.
  • Previous experience in security, law enforcement, or a related field preferred.
  • Excellent observational and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and composed in high-pressure situations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Empathy and understanding of the challenges faced by homeless individuals.
  • Basic knowledge of first aid and CPR is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies and physically intervene when necessary.
Work Environment:
  • Indoor environment.
  • Interaction with individuals who may be experiencing high levels of stress or emotional distress.
