The Spanish Translator, Patient Content is part of the Medical and Health Content team. This team manages all patient-facing medical and health content on cancer.org, as well as in printed booklets, flyers, fact sheets, 3D interactives, videos, presentations, and other formats. The Spanish Translator will perform and facilitate the translation of health and cancer information. This person will be responsible for the accuracy of the translation of complex medical information with a high degree of precision.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Translation:

  • Translates health and cancer information into Spanish using neutral Spanish lexicon for print, web, and call center usage. Formats may include web pages, infographics, illustrations, flyers, booklets, videos, and interactives.
  • Reviews and approves translations submitted by external sources.
  • Collaborates with other in-house translators and translation vendors to ensure consistent quality and tone of content.
  • Performs research, consultation, editing, and proofing to enhance the quality and accuracy of the translations.
  • Confers with Managing Director and Medical Editors for final decisions concerning medical content.

Management of Spanish web content:

  • Manages the Spanish language pages on cancer.org, including adding, editing, publishing, and removing pages to match changes made in English.
  • Collaborates with UX, SEO, and Web Development teams to ensure the needs of Spanish site visitors are met.

Thought leadership:

  • Takes a proactive role to research and suggest new ways of meeting the informational needs of Hispanic and other language communities.
  • Takes a proactive role to research and suggest technological and process improvements to better facilitate translation.
  • Stays apprised of ACS organization and goals and considers how to apply these to special populations.
  • As time permits, may provide consultation to other ACS teams concerning translations and strategies for the Spanish-speaking community.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

FORMAL KNOWLEDGE:

Bachelor’s degree with 3 or more years of translation-related project management. and fluent in Spanish.

COMPETENCIES/SKILLS:

Language/translation:

  • Fully bilingual in English and Spanish with knowledge of medical terminology in both languages.
  • Proficiency in writing, editing, and proofing content using neutral Spanish lexicon.
  • Knowledge of cultural appropriateness and diversity and other issues related to special populations.
  • Language localization skills to adapt content targeted to specific communities, i.e. (1) Hispanics in California/Texas or Hispanics in Florida/New York; (2) Content only for Spanish speakers in the U.S. or only for Latin America.

Technology:

  • Proficiency with Windows operating system and Office suite software.
  • Proficiency in the use and management of CAT (Computer Assisted Translation Tools), preferably TRADOS (Translation Memory Suite).
  • Proficiency with WCMS (Web Content Management Systems) to author content, preferably AEM (Adobe Experience Manager).
  • Familiarity with general website best practices for SEO, user experience, and accessibility.
  • Understanding of basic HTML and general web development concepts.
  • Familiarity with project management and collaboration software, preferably Monday.

Soft skills:

  • Careful attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills to track projects and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritize and make decisions to balance multiple projects.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with the Medical Content team, other ACS teams, and vendors.

The starting rate is $65,000 to $72,000. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
