Job Description

An Industrial Welder/Pipefitter specializing in stainless steel and carbon steel combines the skills of both a welder and a pipefitter. They are responsible for installing, welding, assembling, and maintaining piping systems and structural components made from these materials. This role requires proficiency in multiple welding techniques, as well as pipefitting expertise, to ensure that the systems operate safely and efficiently.

Job Overview :

The industrial welder/pipefitter will be responsible for fabricating, assembling, installing, and welding piping systems and structural components made from stainless steel and carbon steel in industrial settings such as power plants, refineries, manufacturing facilities, and construction sites. This role requires proficiency in both pipefitting and welding techniques to ensure piping systems are installed correctly and function safely.

Key Responsibilities:

Pipefitting Duties:

  1. Fabrication & Assembly

    • Measure, cut, bend, and thread pipes made from stainless steel and carbon steel according to job specifications.

    • Use pipefitting tools and techniques, such as pipe benders, threading machines, and saws, to prepare pipes for installation.

    • Install and secure pipes, valves, and fittings using clamps, brackets, welding, or threading techniques.

  2. Installation & Layout

    • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and isometric drawings to understand the piping layout.

    • Lay out and align piping systems, ensuring proper fit-up and positioning before welding.

    • Assemble and install prefabricated pipes and structural components in industrial facilities.

  3. Testing & Maintenance

    • Conduct pressure tests and inspections to ensure piping systems are leak-proof and meet industry standards.

    • Maintain and repair piping systems by replacing damaged sections or reworking misaligned pipes.

Welding Duties :

  1. Welding & Fabrication

    • Perform various welding techniques, including TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW), and Stick (SMAW), on stainless steel and carbon steel piping and components.

    • Weld piping systems, structural supports, and fittings to meet the required specifications and standards.

    • Ensure that all welds are precise, free of defects, and meet safety regulations.

  2. Welding Preparation

    • Prepare surfaces for welding by cleaning, grinding, and beveling pipes.

    • Tack-weld piping components to hold them in place before final welding.

  3. Weld Inspection & Quality Control

    • Inspect welds to ensure quality, accuracy, and compliance with project specifications and codes (such as ASME, ANSI, or AWS standards).

    • Perform necessary rework on any welds that do not meet quality standards, ensuring they pass inspection.

General Duties:

  1. Safety & Compliance

    • Follow safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as welding helmets, gloves, and fire-resistant clothing.

    • Ensure all welding and pipefitting work complies with relevant safety standards, including OSHA regulations, hot work permits, and confined space procedures.

    • Identify potential hazards and take corrective actions to prevent accidents on the job site.

  2. Documentation & Reporting

    • Document completed welds and pipe installations, including materials used, methods applied, and any modifications made.

    • Communicate issues or discrepancies with supervisors, engineers, or project managers to ensure projects remain on schedule.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required. Completion of a technical certification or apprenticeship program in pipefitting, welding, or a related field is preferred.

  • Experience:

    • 3+ years of industrial experience in welding and pipefitting, with a specific focus on stainless steel and carbon steel.

    • Proven ability to work in industrial settings such as refineries, power plants, and manufacturing facilities.

  • Certifications:

    • AWS (American Welding Society) or ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) certifications for stainless steel and carbon steel welding are highly preferred.

    • Certification in pipefitting or industrial welding processes is an advantage.

  • Skills:

    • Expertise in welding techniques such as TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW), and Stick (SMAW) for stainless steel and carbon steel.

    • Strong understanding of pipefitting principles, including threading, bending, and assembling piping systems.

    • Ability to read and interpret technical blueprints, piping diagrams, and welding symbols.

    • Familiarity with non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for inspecting welds and piping systems.

Working Conditions:

  • Industrial environment, often in confined spaces, at heights, or in extreme temperatures.

  • Exposure to loud noise, heat, fumes, and potentially hazardous materials.

  • Physical demands include lifting heavy objects, standing for extended periods, and working in awkward positions.

  • May require overtime, shift work, or travel to various industrial sites.

Preferred Competencies:

  • Detail-Oriented: Ability to make precise measurements and produce high-quality welds.

  • Problem-Solving: Capable of troubleshooting pipefitting and welding issues, and making quick adjustments on the job.

  • Teamwork: Ability to work well within a team of engineers, supervisors, and other tradespeople.

  • Safety-Conscious: Strong commitment to safety protocols and practices.

Tools & Equipment:

  • Pipefitting tools: Threading machines, pipe benders, saws, and measuring tools.

  • Welding equipment: TIG, MIG, Stick welding machines, plasma cutters, and oxy-fuel cutting systems.

  • Measuring tools: Calipers, micrometers, and protractors for precise measurements.

  • Safety equipment: Welding helmets, gloves, fire-resistant clothing, and respirators.
