Job Description

Volunteer Opportunity At Geisinger Medical Center

Geisinger Medical Center (GMC) is seeking volunteers to join the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP). Volunteers are college students serving to gain experience in an inpatient setting, with no academic credits provided. HELP volunteers must be college students, age 18 or older, actively enrolled in an academic pre-med or clinical studies program. Volunteers participate in direct patient interaction and receive training that enables appropriate, low-risk service. Volunteer service is supervised by a clinical team including physicians, advanced practitioners, and nurse leaders. Participation in the HELP Program requires a minimum of 4 hours a week for a minimum of 100 total hours of service for at least two semesters. Orientations for this program are offered 3x a year in September, Dec/Jan, and May for Fall, Spring & Summer semesters. All onboarding requirements must be completed at least 4 weeks prior to orientation date.

Volunteers represent Geisinger and assist in serving our patients, guests/families, and community; each individual will fulfill a specific role(s) based upon assignment. The support provided by this role will enhance the patient experience and support the work of Geisinger employees.

Our Purpose & Values

Everything we do is about caring for our patients, our members, our students, our Geisinger family, and our communities.

  • Kindness: We strive to treat everyone as we would hope to be treated ourselves.
  • Excellence: We treasure colleagues who humbly strive for excellence.
  • Learning: We share our knowledge with the best and brightest to better prepare the caregivers for tomorrow.
  • Innovation: We constantly seek new and better ways to care for our patients, our members, our community, and the nation.
  • Safety: We provide a safe environment for our patients and members and the Geisinger family.

Geisinger volunteers serve our patients, their families, and our communities with passion and kindness. Our volunteers enhance the patient experience by supporting staff and employees so that we can deliver the highest quality care to our visitors, our patients, and their families.
