Description / Scope / Mission

Creates an EH&S presence across the plant and organization including a physical presence. Serves as the staff specialist in safety by developing and carrying out procedures with the line organization that effectively controls accident and health exposures in the company and minimize OSHA citations in line with the customer expectations and the regulatory requirements (FDA cGMP, BRCGS Consumer Products standard, ISO9001 standard).

 

Key Responsibilities/ Accountabilities

1. Guides investigations on injuries via root cause analysis in conjunction with line and staff personnel. Develops effective and sustainable corrective actions. Notifies top management of pertinent details.

2. Evaluates hazardous conditions and practices and develops hazard control practices and programs. Assists in communicating hazard control information and evaluates effectiveness of the control.

3. Establishes target areas and long-range accident prevention and cost-control objectives.

4. Supports Sustainability activities and programs in coordination with the corporate team.

5. Works with onsite nurse as needed to resolve work related incidents.

6. Supervises the plant Workers’ Compensation and Return to Work Programs.

7. Implements and manages Safety Committee, acting as voice of the committee to upper management.

8. Assists line and staff management to understand OSHA regulations and standards, including guidance on handling OSHA compliance, inspections, and citations.

9. Overviews company accident statistics and makes recommendations for correction of problem areas.

10. Oversees PSM programs by assisting in developing, implementing and sustaining plant specific policies, procedures, programs and training to achieve and maintain compliance.

11. Plans and directs safety and industrial hygiene services of insurance carriers to obtain optimum services.

12. Keeps apprised of developments in federal and state safety laws likely to affect the company.

13. Acts as ranking divisional representative in dealing with government agencies on safety and health matters affecting the company.

14. Devises, supervises and coordinates safety training associated with regulatory compliance.

15. Implements and/or grows a Behavior Base Safety (BBS) Program across the organization.

16. Coordinates permit filing, waste disposal, tank testing and compliance reporting per regulations and policies.

17. Responsibility and compliance to RCRA and SARA Title II Community Right to Know Program.

18. Miscellaneous duties as assigned by Manager.

Education / Certification / Qualifications / Experience

· Bachelor’s Degree in Safety Engineering or Environmental Safety & Health field or equivalent experience

 

Experience:

· Three years’ professional experience in manufacturing industry, with a focus on safety.

· Strong verbal, written, analytical, and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.

· Knowledge of federal, state, local safety, health and medical rules and regulations.

· Familiar with Emergency Procedures in First Aid, CPR, Defibrillator.

· Knowledge of State workers’ compensation and State Disability, FMLA, ADA laws/rules.

· Must possess good organizational and administration skills.

 

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:

· Certified Safety Professional (CSP) status recommended.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

· Stand, walk, talk or hear 2/3 and more of the time.

· Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less).

· Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more).

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PPE REQUIRED:

· Exposure to various chemicals 1/3 and more of the time.

· Work near moving mechanical parts 1/3 and more of the time.

· PPE is required on specific jobs and when PPE is required.

 

COMMENTS

· Be aware of your surroundings. Be aware of emergency stop buttons, walkways, exits. Always be prepared for your next step of duties.
