Job Description

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Criminal Intelligence division is seeking a Criminal Information Analyst/Investigator. This position will perform a wide range of analysis of information relating to criminal activities in support of law enforcement and criminal investigations.

Effective December 31, 2023, there will be a general salary adjustment of 2.5% to the minimum and maximum of the range.

Location and hours:
This position is in the 701 Building located at 701 South 4th Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55417. The primary work schedule is variable 10-hour shifts, Monday through Saturday between the hours of 4 p.m. and 2 a.m. but can include occasional overtime and holidays. Based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

In this position, you will:
  • Research, compile, and analyze map crime trends and patterns; detect and describe tactical, administrative, strategic links and trends in crimes; perform crime analysis in support of law enforcement efforts.
  • Assist patrol, investigative, and administrative staff in planning the deployment of resources for the prevention, intervention, and suppression of criminal activities.
  • Provide investigative case support to assist in criminal investigations. 
  • Produce and disseminate information sharing bulletins and alerts.
  • Act as a liaison to all Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and neighboring law enforcement crime analysis details; respond to inquiries from law enforcement and other agencies.
  • Gather, research, and analyze information to develop criminal information products.
Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Five years or more of investigation, law enforcement, or military investigator experience.
    • Associate degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, business/public administration, sociology, statistics, crime analysis, information technology, psychology, or a closely related field and three years or more of investigation, law enforcement, or military investigator experience.
    • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, business/public administration, sociology, statistics, crime analysis, information technology, psychology   and one year or more of investigation, law enforcement, or military investigator experience.
Nice to have:
  • Military intelligence experience to include counterdrug analyst experience.
  • Crime or trend analysis experience.
  • Experience:
    • Analyzing and interpreting complex statistical data and creating graphic representations of data; specifically, in an investigative or law enforcement setting.
    • Collecting and interpreting data and information from a variety of sources and preparing reports using reporting tools.
    • Presenting data to groups in various settings.
    • Creating queries to extract data from relational databases.
    • Working with federal, state, and local law enforcement databases.
    • Working with Arc GIS Mapping, I2 analytical software, and Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge and experience using data formatting and reporting tools in Microsoft Excel (especially use of sort function, filters, pivot tables, and data duplication).
  • Knowledge of research and data analysis methods and techniques.
  • Ability to:
    • Collect, assemble, analyze, evaluate evidence, statistics, and other pertinent information to draw logical conclusions to solve crimes.
    • Apply problem solving skills and make data driven recommendations for action.
    • Maintain confidential data and comply with data privacy requirements.
    • Communicate verbally and in writing.
