Johns Hopkins Facilities and Real Estate (JHFRE) is seeking an Architectural Space Systems Intern to participate in space management data activities in support of Real Estate and Facilities operations at Johns Hopkins campuses. As part of the JHFRE IT (information technology) team, the intern will report to the JHFRE Space Systems Manager and will work to collect information related to building floorplans and space allocation. This position includes both office-based and field-based work.

Field-based assignments include data collection indoors throughout campus buildings, often those recently undergoing renovations or construction. This information may include photos, space attributes, and dimensions of building floorplans, with the possibility of some elements being recorded using mobile devices. Office-based assignments include entering information into space management systems, CAD data management and data conversion, and preparing and delivering floorplans and space allocation data.

The intern will conduct in-person or remote check-in and check-out calls each day with the JHFRE Space Systems Manager to review tasks, issues, and other requirements. The intern will also attend weekly IT team meetings. This position is in person only.

Note: This position is not benefits eligible.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform field surveying of building interior floorplan layouts using tablet-based CAD tools, hand-held measurement devices, and field notes.
  • Assist in JHFRE's efforts to build and maintain an effective architectural database.
  • Participate in collaborative research and development of the usage of Autodesk related technology.
  • Produce information products and compile printed or digitally exported floorplans to support JHFRE operations.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED. 
  • Must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program (Associate’s or Bachelor’s) in the following fields: architecture, drafting, engineering, or related fields.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience with conducting on-site field measurements, surveys, and/or data collection.
  • Experience with producing floorplans in AutoCAD, Revit, Computer-Aided Facilities Management (CAFM), or similar systems.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Outlook, Word.
  • Ability to produce accurate, timely delivery of complex materials.
  • Organized. Able to prioritize and accomplish a wide variety and scale of projects.
  • Committed to the mission of the University, customer service, and best practices in space management.

Communication

  • Exchanges routine and non-routine information with staff, faculty, students, and vendors using effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Communicates daily with the JHFRE Space Systems Manager via Zoom, Teams, and in person.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to navigate the University’s various physical locations to collect data/information using field data collection equipment (tablet computer, camera, laser measuring device).
  • Ability to work in a stationary position in an office environment for extended periods of time.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
