The Adolescent Health Education Specialist (AHES) is primarily responsible for facilitating evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention and adolescent health curricula to youth age 10-19 in Tulsa County for the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) of the Tulsa Health Department. Additionally, the AHES is responsible for providing educational information, programs, and resources to school personnel, parents, caregivers and trusted adults, social service agencies, healthcare providers and faith communities.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: The following functions represent the majority of duties performed by the position but are not meant to be all-inclusive or prevent other duties from being assigned when necessary. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (100% of Time): 1. Replicate evidence-based program models with fidelity to youth in high schools, middle schools, and alternative schools, serving approximately 1,800 youth each year. 2. Present topics such as reproductive anatomy, contraceptive methods, STIs and HIV and healthy relationships, and other health education topics in a trauma-responsive, youth-centered, and inclusive way that supports and engages all youth. 3. Complete required training in support of duties and responsibilities of this position, including curricula identified by program funders. 4. Assist with the planning and scheduling of implementation at schools receiving teen pregnancy prevention curriculum as outlined by program funders. 5. Secure supplemental educational materials needed to present adolescent health education topics; and prepare speeches, lectures, and demonstrations on adolescent health education topics. 6. Comply with all grant deliverables and required reporting and documentation in an accurate and timely manner. 7. Provide community education for adults and/or parents and guardians of adolescents to assist them in the prevention of adolescent pregnancy in their families and the community and empower parents/guardians to be the primary sexuality educators of their children. 8. Retrieve, interpret, and disseminate statistical information such as teen birth rates, YRBS, and HIV/STD rates to the community to increase their understanding of the outcomes of teen pregnancy, STD including HIV, and earlier sexual initiation. 9. Assist participants with inquiries and referrals to area resources. 10. Participate in community partnerships, implement public awareness activities, advocate for the project efforts, and build the community's capacity to prevent adolescent pregnancy and reduce associated risk behaviors. 11. Promote the Health Department's educational programs to individuals and community groups. 12. Assist and/or coordinate activities with other Tulsa Health Department Programs. 13. Other duties as assigned including those required to fulfill activities in support of public health emergency operations.
QUALIFICATIONS / SPECIFICATIONS: Education: Baccalaureate degree in public health, health education/health promotion, social science, education, or a related field required. Experience: Two to four years of experience in public health, health education/promotion, youth development, education, public speaking, program development, and communication skills preferred. Experience working with diverse populations preferred. Knowledge & Skills: Effective oral and written communication. Comfortable preparing and conducting in-person and virtual presentations for adolescent and adult audiences. Proficient in Microsoft Office. Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred; Bilingual required for one TANF position. Licenses: Valid Oklahoma driver's license. INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Internal contact with coworkers, managers, and other TCCHD personnel regarding teen pregnancy prevention and adolescent reproductive health activities. External contact with the public (student, civic, and social organizations) to give health information or make referrals. External contact with outside schools and organizations to exchange information to promote teen pregnancy prevention, adolescent reproductive health education, and other adolescent health education topics, coordinate referrals, establish and facilitate partnerships, and link participants and partners to appropriate services. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Communicate: Daily presentations to various age groups both in-person and virtual. Operate: Frequent operation of computers, audio-visual equipment, phones, and other office productivity machinery. Must be able to bend, reach above shoulder height, pick up or move equipment and supplies weighing up to 30 pounds. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY / ACCOUNTABILITY: Direct Supervision None. Indirect Supervision None. Budget/Money/Material Responsible for assigned equipment. Reports to PREP Manager WORKING CONDITIONS: Position will be working in Tulsa County schools and youth-serving organizations. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must maintain THD records confidentiality unless officially authorized to release a record. Must possess the ability and willingness to perform work-related travel. Must be available for occasional work outside of normal office hours including mornings, evenings, and weekends. FLSA Status: Exempt
